It's startling fo...Thanks for posting that art. It's startling for me to see how much those initial Phyrexian designs take from the Mass Production Evangelion featured in the End of Evangelion film. The film released in Japan in July 1997 and this issue of Duelist was published in November 1998, leaving about fifteen months for those visuals to percolate in the artist's head. The gnashing teeth, the bright red of the pulled-back gums/lips, the eyeless/phallic head, the jutting chin, the pale spindly body... Even that one artwork with the head in the pool of blood immediately reminds me of a very specific shot from the film. I know the internet was very different back then, but Evangelion was already making waves in English anime circles as early as 1996, so it isn't far-fetched to say the film would be on people's radar.<br /><br />I can see that it was eventually refined into the Negator-type model we got on Phyrexian Negator, as I suspect this particular design might have hewed a little too close to imitation for comfort. <br /><br />And in a way, I think this style did return for their update in New Phyrexia (see Inquisitor Exarch).PyreDreamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00010061627270636479noreply@blogger.com
